WILLIAM CAMPBELL

(OCTOBER 2014)

DNA WRITES THE FINAL CHAPTER

[AN INQUIRY INTO RELATEDNESS USING GENETIC GENEALOGY]

Genetic genealogy has produced a science-based conclusion where traditional genealogy "came up short" due to a lack of existing records. The central question in this inquiry  was whether or not the William Campbell who lived out most of his adult life in Ontario, Canada  was indeed the same William Campbell who was baptized by Sylvester Campbell and Helen Mason on March 26, 1819. Through the facilities of Family Tree DNA, samples were tested on a male descendant of the William Campbell who resided in Ontario, Canada and on male descendants of Adam Corbet Campbell and George Campbell, already identified and accepted as sons of Sylvester Campbell and Helen Mason. Final genetic results became available in October 2014. When compared against the entire DNA database at Family Tree DNA, the only "matches" identified by the Y-111 DNA tests were these three individuals' samples with each other. Family Tree DNA characterized these matches as representing individuals whose male lineages were "tightly related". Traditional genealogy had already identified the relationship between these three male lines as that of "third cousins". In short, William Campbell, Adam Corbet Campbell and George Campbell were scientifically demonstrated to be "genetic" brothers. Two additional analyses carried out using the utilities at  Gedmatch.com placed the likely position of the MRCA (most recent common ancestor) of three tested individuals at 3.7 (4) and 3.8 (4) generations respectively. Sylvester Campbell and Helen Mason were the predicted four generations removed from the current individuals being tested in 2014.

The fact that all three tested samples showed a "tight genetic relationship" with an identified genetic distance of only two and three respectively and a predicted male MRCA living four generations in the past provides enough evidence  for this researcher  to conclude that the William Campbell who lived out most of his adult life in Ontario, Canada was the same William Campbell baptized by Sylvester Campbell and Helen Mason on March 26, 1819 at Drumoak, Aberdeenshire, Scotland.

DNA writes the final chapter!
