This course assumes no knowledge of hardward and software and is less intensive than "Introduction to Computers".

set-up for special formats / operations [tables / graphics]
creation of documents [letter / memo / resume / newsletter / chart]

Spreadsheeting:
data entry [general formats / cell formats / alignments / decimal places]
using formulas / functions to calculate results

Databasing:
basic concepts [database / record / field / sorting / querying]
using sorting / querying to find information within an existing database *

Internet/Email:
using browser to explore Internet content [browse / search]
sending/receiving email [attachments / address books / email lists]

Desktop Publishing:
using software to combine text / graphics in a sample production

Presentations:
using presentations software to produce a simple slide show

System Design:
identifying components in a "current" multimedia computer system
discussing reasonable cost of a "new" system / cost of upgrading an older system

Windows:
navigating in a WINDOWS graphical environment [toolbars / scrollbars / screen options]
discussing / using WINDOWS software [accessories / control panel / set-up options] *

File Management:
practising file management techniques

Expectations:
discussing reasonable expectations / projects for computers [genealogy / tax preparation]

NOTE: No single textbook is recommended for this course simply because it would take a small shelf of reference books to support all of the course topics. If a students feels that they need the support of a reference manual the suggested course of action is to purchase a reference manual which directly supports their operating system or the word processor which they will be using on their own home or office system.
